What it should not be about - dirty tricks!
Recently, House Speaker Pro Tempore Doug Smith and Katon Dawson, Chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party traveled around south Carolina to set the record straight. In their press conferences, Doug and Katon said "Rep. Tracy Edge and many other Republican State House candidates have been anonymously attacked by the Democrats. The Democrats are doing this with an out of state group using 'push poll' phone calls. This is an old dirty campaign trick. But this time the voters aren't going to fall for it.
The Democrats are calling voters and telling them misleading and negative information about our Republican candidates. The callers don't identify who's behind the call. Instead they hoodwink voters into believing they're conducting independent survey. The truth is they are spreading lies and half-truths while hiding behind a third party group. This is low-down dirty politics and it needs to stop.
Some of the questions asked were 'would you be less likely to vote for candidate X if you knew they hated the environment,' or 'if you new they lived in a big house and were out of touch with voters.' Other questions ranged from lying about a Representative's attendance record to actually asking if the voter knew the candidate is in a wheel chair."
What it should be about!
Experience I have been your South Carolina State Representative from district 104 since 1996. Those six years have taught me how to get things done, who gets them done and when to get things done. I have been successful for District 104 - see the front page. Those accomplishments came from a learning experience that I acquired while putting the District needs at the height of my agenda.
Seniority Seniority is a major factor that voters need to consider. Experience means knowing how to get things done, seniority provides the means. In the next session in the South Carolina state government seniority will enable me to accomplish things that coupled with experience would not be capable by a freshman representative.
Campaign Reform
The current process has too many loopholes and allows for the system to be circumvented. I will push for greater disclosure and accountability so that anonymous attack ads become illegal.
Judicial Review Input
Greater latitude and import should be given to the public and to the judicial screening committee so we can hold judges accountable.
Widening of Highway 17
Expansion from 4 lanes to 6 lanes between Gator Plaza and the InterCoastal Waterway Bridge.
Cherry Grove Inlet Dredging
Secure approval and the permits necessary to begin dredging the inlet channels.
Intersection Improvements
Begin planning and construction of Highway 17 intersection upgrades at River Hills and Coquina Harbor. I propose to have studied other intersections along major thoroughfares to see if traffic signals or design modifications are necessary.
Reform of the Department of Motor Vehicles
under the direction of Governor Hodges the DMV has floundered because of poor management. I propose to initiate a process to either dramatically improve the DMV under state control or enter into a privatization arrangement.
Education Improvements
So that class sizes can continue to be reduced, I propose to direct more funding to the classroom rather than the bureaucracy. I will push to increase emphasis on early childhood reading programs through increased funding and elimination of unnecessary bureaucracy and raise teacher salary's to the national average so we may attract and retain the best and brightest teachers.
